cat advice anyone? my cat has started paw in his water bowl and make a mess -- how to stop that and why is he doing it? his water is fresh

Cats are very finicky critters. There's fresh and then there's FRESH. Cats can sense, or maybe smell the amount of oxygen in their water. Try changing the water more often than you think is necessary. Oh, and wash the bowl frequently, too, especially if it's a ceramic one. You might also try keeping the water as cold as possible.
His whiskers might be touching the sides of the bowl. They HATE that. Try a wider bowl.
Sometimes cats can't tell how deep the water is and, to keep from getting their faces wet, they'll use their paw as a depth-finder.
Some cats just like to play, I guess.
